POISON WHISKEY MEETS LYNYRD SKYNYRD
"Meeting with Skynyrd at Darien Lake: I'll remember that day the rest of my life- Saturday September 5, 1998. There we were, about to meet our idols. Nervous like sixteen year old girls on the first date. Unbelievable!! We had our backstage passes in our sweaty hands, and we were ready to go!! We had spent most of the afternoon out in the parking lot drinkin', and gettin' ready for what was to happen." |
"They had us all waiting next to the stage before they went on. It's funny lookin' back, John Kay and Steppenwolf did their show before Skynyrd, while we were standing there, and I don't remember one note!" |
"Then the door opened and they let us in. I remember thinking 'what the hell am I going to say???' It's funny how all my life I knew the things I wanted to ask, but right then I couldn't think of one damn one of 'em!! I also remember wondering how in the hell those people they were traveling with, could just sit there!! Didn't they know they were in the presence of greatness?? But then I brought myself back down to earth.....after all, they're just people. (very, very talented people!!) " |
"The first one we saw was Gary Rossington, and Rob says 'Hey Gary, how 'bout a picture?'" |
"Then Rob and I both got a picture with him." |
"He was real nice and cool with us. He took the time to let us take all the pictures we wanted to." |
"We told Gary that we had a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, and we sure would like his personal grace to do there music. He told us 'HELL YEAH please keep the music alive!!' I remember Rob tellin' him that he was his idol, and Gary looked real humbled." |
"The next one we met was Johnny VanZant. We had a great conversation with him." |
He was real interested in the tribute thing we were doin' and all. I told him how himself and specially his older brothers were a big influence on me. |
"All the guys were great to sign all our stuff, but Johnny was extra eager to." |
"He also posed for a lot of pictures." |
"Then we met Rick Medlock (of Blackfoot) and Hughey Thomason (of the Outlaws) who are both now with Skynyrd." |
"Rick started playin' music with Skynyrd years and years ago, and Hughey used to fill in for whoever years back on the old tours, so they're all Skynyrd to us!! Those guys were great!!!" |
"Billy Powell, and Leon Wilkeson stayed on the bus......too tired. After all, the guys told us they were just about to play their seventh show in seven days...so...oh well. Better luck next time." |
"All in all, it was the experience of a
lifetime!!!!! Without a doubt!!! Something we
will all remember for years to come." -Hoss |
